Under the Microscope: Foursquare’s Super Bowl Check-in

What: Promoting Trending Venue is an experiment Foursquare is trying out during the Super Bowl.

How: Instead of checking into a real venue, people will check into “Super Bowl Sunday” when it is placed at the top of the Trending Now area on Foursquare’s mobile apps. If you shout which team you are rooting for, you get a badge that comes with unique redemption codes for a 20% discount on merchandise at NFLShop.com.

Why: No money is changing hands with this experiment but it will clearly raise Foursquare’s profile. Tech Crunch anticipates it will be the most checked-in venue of all time.

Why else: This will be the first time unique redemption codes are attached to badges, TechCrunch also says – a monetization possibility for brands in the future.
